Katherine Johnson was a pioneering mathematician whose contributions played a crucial role in the early years of the United States space program. Born on August 26, 1918, in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, Katherine Goble Johnson exhibited an early aptitude for mathematics. Growing up in a time when racial and gender barriers were pervasive, Johnson faced numerous challenges in pursuing her passion for mathematics and science.
Despite the societal constraints, Katherine Johnson's talents were evident from a young age. She graduated summa cum laude from West Virginia University in 1937 with degrees in Mathematics and French. However, limited opportunities for African-American women in academia prompted Johnson to join the workforce.
In 1953, Katherine Johnson joined the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), the precursor to NASA. At NACA, Johnson's mathematical prowess quickly garnered attention, and she became an integral part of the Space Task Group. During the early years of the space program, Johnson's calculations were essential for trajectory analysis and orbital mechanics.
One of Katherine Johnson's most notable contributions was her work on John Glenn's historic orbital flight in 1962. Glenn, the first American to orbit the Earth, specifically requested Johnson to verify the calculations for his mission.
